Former Netflix executive Anthony Wood, also known for inventing the DVR, founded Roku in 2002 (article). Roku is a hardware product, not a content creator similar to a movie studio. What is impeding the sale of more Roku is the lack of content on the internet as compared to television. And instead of producing that content by itself, Roku can still support content by providing complementary services like hosting and software solutions to independently owned libraries of content.
